FANDOM MEETS ACTIVISM
So, consider what activism is - intentional action to challenge existing hegemonies (or the predominant influence of one group over another) and provoke political and/or social change. Activism is resistance, pushing back in order to provoke change.
Fandoms can unite to address civic, political, and social issues through the popular culture they love so much. Young people are often criticized for their lack of civic engagement and political participation because they often feel excluded: they are not invited to participate, their issues aren't addressed, and the political language assumes familiarity with that discourse.
And that is the great thing about fandoms meeting activism. Young people are civically and politically engaged, just in new and different ways unfamiliar to the establishment. Young people have access to fandoms and to social networks that can allow for resistance.
